Nail That Interview: How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself”
The Interview Ice-Breaker That Could Make or Break Your Chances
We’ve all heard it. You sit down, adjust your blazer, and they hit you with: “So… tell me about yourself.”
It seems simple, but this question is where many interviews go off course. Here’s how to master your answer—and leave a lasting impression.
Why This Question Matters
It’s not small talk. Interviewers want to know:
-
If you can summarise your experience confidently
-
How well your background matches the role
-
Whether you communicate clearly under pressure
A great answer sets the tone and gives your interviewer a reason to lean in.
Structure Your Answer Like This
Keep it sharp, relevant, and tailored:
-
Present – Brief overview of your current role
-
Past – Key highlights from previous experience
-
Future – Why you’re excited about this opportunity
Example:
"I'm currently an Office Manager with 5 years of experience streamlining admin systems. Before that, I worked in customer-facing roles where I developed my problem-solving and multitasking. I’m now looking to join a company like yours where I can grow and contribute in a fast-paced team."
Practice = Confidence
Say it out loud. Tweak it until it flows naturally. Avoid rambling or reciting your CV. Keep it to about 60–90 seconds, and end on a positive note.
