While your CV gets you through the door, how you carry yourself in the interview room can strongly influence an employer’s decision. Non-verbal cues often speak louder than words, and mastering them can give you a real edge.
Make a Strong First Impression
From the moment you step through the door—or join a video call—your interviewer is forming an impression. A confident smile, eye contact, and a professional handshake (if in person) instantly set a positive tone. On video calls, make sure your camera is at eye level and you’re framed neatly.
Sit with Confidence, Not Rigidity
Slouching can appear disinterested, while sitting bolt upright can come across as tense. The sweet spot is a relaxed but attentive posture: back straight, shoulders open, and leaning slightly forward when engaged. This shows you’re focused without looking uncomfortable.
Use Gestures Naturally
Hand gestures can emphasise enthusiasm and help you appear approachable. The trick is balance—avoid over-exaggerated movements, but don’t clamp your arms tightly to your sides either. Natural, open gestures convey confidence.
