How to Follow Up After a Job Interview Without Being Pushy
t’s Sunday, 27th July 2025—a perfect day for job seekers to reflect, reset, and plan their next move. If you’ve had an interview recently and are now stuck in that awkward waiting period, today’s tip is just for you.
Following up after a job interview can feel like walking a tightrope. You want to show you're keen—but you don’t want to come across as desperate or annoying. The truth is, following up is not only acceptable, it's expected—if done the right way.
Here’s how to follow up professionally, stay top of mind, and maybe even tip the scales in your favour.
Wait the Right Amount of Time
Timing is everything. As a general rule, give it 48–72 hours after your interview before sending a follow-up. This gives the employer space to reflect and speak with other stakeholders. If they gave you a decision timeline in the interview, wait until that time has passed. Jumping in too early can feel impatient—waiting too long might give the impression you’re not that bothered.
Send a Thank You Email—But Make It Meaningful
If you haven’t already, a well-written thank you email can go a long way. Mention something specific from the interview that resonated with you or a challenge the business is facing that you're excited to help solve. Keep it short, warm, and enthusiastic. Avoid templates—personal touches show genuine interest.
Reaffirm Your Interest and Fit
our follow-up is a second chance to remind the interviewer why you’re the right person for the job. Briefly highlight a skill or experience you didn’t get to emphasise fully, or how your values align with their culture. This isn’t about rehashing your CV—it’s about connecting the dots between you and their business needs.
Stay Professional, Even If There’s No Reply
If you don’t hear back, send a polite nudge after a week or two. But avoid repeated chasing—it’s a fine line between proactive and pushy. If they’ve gone silent, it may simply be that things are delayed behind the scenes (which happens often). Stay courteous and professional—you never know when another opportunity at that company might arise.
