A Busy Day Recruiting for Finance Roles in Cheshire
A Busy Day Recruiting for Finance Roles in Cheshire
Some recruitment days are nicely organised.
Others feel like controlled chaos from the minute the phone starts ringing.
Today definitely fell into the second category.
By 8:15am, I’d already had calls from two Cheshire businesses needing urgent finance recruitment support, several candidate emails waiting for replies and an interview rearrangement caused by motorway traffic near Knutsford.
Fairly standard for recruitment, to be honest.
Finance Recruitment Still Feels Incredibly Busy
One thing I’ve noticed recently is how consistently active the finance recruitment market remains across Cheshire.
Despite all the uncertainty businesses keep hearing about nationally, companies across Northwich, Winsford and Knutsford are still hiring steadily within finance teams.
Today alone we worked on:
- an Accounts Assistant role in Northwich
- a Payroll Administrator vacancy near Winsford
- a Credit Controller position in Knutsford
- a temporary Purchase Ledger requirement
- an Assistant Management Accountant role
The challenge isn’t usually finding applicants.
The challenge is finding the right applicants.
That’s become a huge difference in recruitment over the last couple of years.
The Morning Started With an Employer Concern
The first proper conversation of the day was with a Finance Director who sounded genuinely frustrated.
They’d been advertising an accounts vacancy themselves for nearly three weeks and were receiving applications, but very few candidates actually matched what they needed.
The role required:
- Sage experience
- reconciliations knowledge
- strong Excel skills
- payroll support capability
- good communication skills
But most applications either lacked experience or came from candidates wanting fully remote working, which the business simply couldn’t offer.
It’s becoming a common issue locally.
A lot of Cheshire employers still underestimate how selective finance professionals can now afford to be.
Strong candidates know their value.
Candidates Are Asking Better Questions
One thing I genuinely like about today’s market is that candidates are becoming more thoughtful about career moves.
Years ago, conversations often focused purely on salary.
Now candidates want to know:
- what the company culture feels like
- whether management are supportive
- staff retention levels
- flexibility around working hours
- progression opportunities
- long-term business stability
I had a conversation this afternoon with a candidate from Northwich who turned down an interview elsewhere because the employer took nearly two weeks to provide feedback after the initial call.
Candidates notice communication standards now.
And honestly, they should.
Recruitment Often Involves Reassurance
One part of the job people probably don’t see enough is the amount of reassurance involved.
Recruitment isn’t just arranging interviews.
Today I spent nearly half an hour speaking with a candidate who’d recently been made redundant from a finance role after several years with the same company.
Technically, she interviewed well and had a strong CV.
But confidence had understandably taken a hit.
Sometimes candidates simply need someone honest in their corner reminding them:
- the market is still active
- their experience still has value
- redundancy isn’t career failure
- the right role often takes time
A few hours later, we secured her an interview with a growing business near Winsford.
Those moments genuinely make the stressful parts of recruitment worthwhile.
The Cheshire Finance Market Has Changed
There’s definitely been a shift in the local finance recruitment market recently.
Businesses are still hiring, but expectations have changed on both sides.
Employers want:
- reliability
- stability
- adaptability
- system knowledge
- stronger soft skills
Candidates want:
- flexibility
- progression
- better management
- work-life balance
- security
The recruiters sitting in the middle are often trying to align those expectations realistically.
That’s why local market knowledge matters so much.
Understanding Cheshire properly helps enormously when advising both clients and candidates.
Why Local Recruitment Experience Still Matters
Recruitment in Cheshire isn’t the same as recruitment in Manchester, Birmingham or London.
Travel expectations alone are completely different.
Today I spoke with a candidate who was perfectly happy travelling between Northwich and Knutsford daily but had zero interest in commuting into Manchester city centre.
Local geography genuinely affects recruitment success.
Knowing:
- traffic patterns
- transport routes
- salary expectations
- hiring trends
- which businesses are growing
all helps recruiters provide better advice.
That local understanding is something clients consistently tell us they value at Howard James Recruitment.
A Small Win Before the End of the Day
Just before finishing this evening, one of our finance candidates accepted a new role.
Nothing dramatic.
No huge celebration.
Just a really solid placement with a stable local business and a genuinely happy candidate.
Those are often the best outcomes.
Recruitment can feel fast-paced and pressured, but ultimately it still comes down to helping people and businesses move forward positively.
And after a hectic day of finance recruitment across Cheshire, that’s always a good way to finish.
