Specialist Contractors, Delivered Quickly and Ready to Contribute
Howard James Recruitment sources experienced contract professionals across the UK — for projects, skills gaps, business transitions and fixed-term requirements — without the long-term commitment of a permanent hire.
When to use contract recruitment
The right tool for the right requirement
Contract recruitment sits between temporary staffing and permanent hiring. It's the right choice when you need someone with genuine specialist experience for a defined period — and when a permanent hire either isn't justified or isn't the right answer yet.
The key difference from temporary staffing is depth of expertise. Contract professionals are typically senior, highly experienced and brought in specifically because they can do something your existing team can't — or not quickly enough.
The key difference from permanent hiring is flexibility. You get the expertise without the long-term commitment, and you can scale up or down as your project demands change.
- Project-based work A defined piece of work requiring specialist skills for a set period — systems implementations, process improvements, financial projects.
- Business transformation Restructures, mergers, rapid growth or change programmes where you need experienced leadership or specialist support quickly.
- Covering a skills gap Your existing team lacks a specific capability needed right now — a contract professional bridges that gap without a permanent headcount decision.
- Interim management Senior roles that are vacant, transitional or newly created — where you need experienced leadership while a permanent appointment is made.
- Fixed-term requirements Maternity cover, extended leave or a role with a clear end date where a permanent hire doesn't make sense.
Our process
How we find and place contract professionals
Speed matters with contract recruitment — but the brief still needs to be right before the search starts. Here's how we work.
Brief and scope
We start with a clear conversation about the project, the skills required, the timeline and the day rate. The better we understand the requirement, the faster we move.
Candidate search
We draw on our existing contractor network first — professionals we know and have placed before. For specialist requirements we cast the net wider and approach the market directly.
Screening and shortlist
Every contractor is assessed against the specific requirement before we put them forward. You see a focused shortlist with context — not a long list of CVs to sift through.
Placement confirmed
We manage the contracting arrangements, confirm start details and brief the contractor on your business and project so they can contribute from day one.
Ongoing support
We stay in contact throughout the assignment — checking in with both you and the contractor to make sure the placement is delivering what you need.
Why Howard James
Contract recruitment done properly
Contract professionals need to hit the ground running. That only happens when the brief is right, the screening is thorough and the match is genuine — not just a CV that ticks the boxes.
An established contractor network
We have an active pool of contract professionals across our sectors — people we know, have placed before and can vouch for. For many requirements we don't need to start from scratch.
Sector specialists, not generalists
Our consultants recruit within defined disciplines — commercial, finance, HR, operations, sales and administration. That depth means we understand what a strong contractor looks like in your sector.
Speed without cutting corners
We can place contractors quickly — often within days for commercial and office-based roles. That speed comes from having the right relationships already in place, not from rushing the process.
Thorough vetting as standard
Every contractor we put forward has been properly assessed — experience verified, references checked, suitability confirmed. You get people we'd genuinely recommend, not just available.
Flexible contract terms
We handle the contracting arrangements and stay flexible as your requirements evolve — whether you need to extend, reduce scope, or bring the assignment to an early close.
UK-wide coverage
With offices across the UK including Manchester, Birmingham, London and throughout Cheshire and the North West, we have contractor networks wherever your project is based.
Sectors we cover
Contract recruitment across 12 specialist disciplines
We recruit contract professionals within defined sectors — the same depth of focus we apply to permanent and temporary hiring.
Thinking about a permanent hire instead?
Want permanent quality without the upfront fee?
If your contract requirement is likely to become a permanent role — or if you want to make a permanent hire but prefer to spread the fee and reduce financial risk — our Flex Fee service gives you full market access with the fee spread across 12 weeks. If the hire doesn't work out, payments stop.
Questions
Contract recruitment — common questions
Straightforward answers to what clients typically ask before placing a contract requirement with us.
How quickly can you place a contractor?
For most commercial and office-based contract roles we can present a shortlist within 48–72 hours and have someone placed within a week. More specialist or senior roles may take a little longer — we'll give you a realistic timeframe when you brief us.
What sectors do you recruit contract professionals in?
We recruit across commercial, finance, HR, operations, sales, administration, IT, engineering, marketing, cyber security, supply chain, property and construction. Our consultants recruit within defined disciplines so you get genuine sector knowledge rather than a generalist search.
How long can a contract assignment last?
Contract assignments can range from a few weeks to 12 months or more depending on the requirement. We're flexible — if your project extends or concludes early we can adjust the arrangement accordingly.
How are contractors engaged — through you or directly?
This depends on the contractor's working arrangement and IR35 status. We'll discuss the right engagement model when we take the brief — whether that's through us, directly, or via the contractor's own limited company. We'll make sure the arrangement is compliant and straightforward to manage.
Are contractors vetted before you put them forward?
Yes. Every contractor we present has been interviewed by us, had their experience verified and been assessed against the specific requirement. We don't forward CVs we haven't reviewed — you only see candidates we'd genuinely recommend.
What if the contract role is likely to become permanent?
That's a common situation. If it becomes permanent we'll discuss the appropriate arrangement at that point. Alternatively, if you're already thinking about a permanent hire and want to spread the fee and reduce your financial risk, our Flex Fee service may be worth considering from the outset.
