Health and Safety Consultant
Location: Penkridge, Staffordshire
Salary: £38,500 per annum
Contract: Permanent, full-time
Howard James Recruitment is supporting our client in the appointment of a Health and Safety Consultant. This varied, hands-on role will suit a technically capable professional who enjoys building trusted client relationships and providing practical, proportionate advice.
The Role
You will support clients across a range of environments, combining technical expertise with sound professional judgement. The role includes site-based work, client meetings, audits, investigations, training and the development of effective health and safety arrangements.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake legal compliance audits, inspections and site-specific risk assessments.
- Develop tailored legal registers, prioritised action plans and clear technical reports.
- Support the development and implementation of health and safety management systems.
- Audit facilities, activities and processes against legislation, recognised good practice and management system requirements.
- Provide practical technical advice to clients and their management teams.
- Liaise with regulators and other relevant organisations on behalf of clients where required.
- Investigate accidents and incidents, including complex or sensitive matters.
- Provide on-site support, including interim health and safety consultancy or management support where needed.
- Design and deliver training, seminars and facilitated workshops.
- Support and mentor junior colleagues, including reviewing technical work where appropriate.
About You
You will have a clear understanding of health and safety legislation and practical compliance requirements, together with the confidence to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
- At least two years’ experience in a health and safety role, or relevant experience in areas such as construction, manufacturing, engineering or environmental health.
- Strong technical report-writing and communication skills.
- The ability to manage your own workload, take ownership and use initiative.
- Sound judgement, logical problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt your approach to different situations.
- Professionalism, integrity, accountability and commercial awareness.
- A willingness to continue learning and undertake professional development.
- A full UK driving licence and eligibility to work in the UK.
Tech IOSH membership or above, and experience in CDM or fire safety, would be advantageous but are not essential.

The initial period will be office-based unless you are attending a site visit or client appointment. The role involves travel throughout the UK, including occasional overnight stays and work outside standard office hours where required. A probation period applies.
