Helping Candidates Prepare for Interviews
Helping Candidates Prepare for Interviews
One of the biggest misconceptions about recruitment is that our job ends once we arrange an interview.
In reality, that’s often where the real work starts.
Today was heavily focused on candidate interview preparation across several different roles in Cheshire, and it reminded me how much confidence, communication and preparation still influence hiring decisions.
Because honestly, good candidates still lose jobs through poor interview preparation far more often than they should.
Interviews Still Make People Nervous
It doesn’t matter whether somebody has five years’ experience or twenty-five.
Interviews make most people nervous.
This morning I spoke with a Finance Assistant from Northwich who openly admitted she barely slept the night before her interview.
Completely understandable.
Changing jobs is a major life decision and candidates naturally put pressure on themselves to perform well.
What I always tell candidates is this:
Employers rarely expect perfection.
They simply want to see:
- honesty
- enthusiasm
- communication skills
- reliability
- professionalism
- genuine interest in the opportunity
A lot of interviews are simply conversations underneath all the formalities.
The Most Common Interview Mistake
One issue that came up repeatedly today was candidates not researching businesses properly beforehand.
You’d be surprised how often employers still ask:
“What do you know about our company?”
And receive very little back.
It doesn’t need to be a rehearsed speech.
But candidates should absolutely know:
- what the business does
- where they’re based
- what the role involves
- who they work with
- why the opportunity interests them
I had a candidate interviewing for an office role near Winsford today and we spent time beforehand discussing the company’s background, recent growth and the likely challenges within the role.
That preparation genuinely helps confidence levels massively.
Employers Notice Energy and Attitude
One thing I consistently hear from employers across Cheshire is that attitude matters just as much as experience.
Particularly in office, finance and commercial recruitment.
A candidate can have a technically strong CV, but if they come across uninterested, negative or difficult to engage with during interview, employers quickly lose confidence.
Likewise, candidates who communicate well and show enthusiasm often leave a much stronger impression.
A client in Knutsford actually said to me this afternoon:
“We can train systems. We can’t train attitude.”
That probably sums the market up perfectly right now.
Interview Preparation Is About More Than Questions
When we prepare candidates for interviews at Howard James Recruitment, it’s rarely just about rehearsing answers.
We discuss:
- company culture
- likely interview style
- employer expectations
- confidence levels
- salary discussions
- career goals
- first impressions
Sometimes candidates simply need reassurance.
Especially if:
- they’ve been made redundant
- they haven’t interviewed for years
- confidence has taken a knock
- they’ve had previous interview setbacks
Recruitment can become surprisingly personal at times.
You end up supporting people through stressful situations, career uncertainty and big life decisions.
Salary Conversations Are Becoming More Open
One interesting thing I noticed today is how much more openly candidates are discussing salary expectations compared to a few years ago.
Candidates want transparency early.
And honestly, that usually helps everyone.
There’s nothing worse than multiple interview stages only to discover expectations are miles apart at offer stage.
The Cheshire recruitment market has become much more commercially aware recently.
Candidates understand their market value better and employers are becoming more realistic about what good people cost.
That balance is important.
Confidence Changes Everything
One of the nicest moments today came after an interview feedback call with a candidate we’d been supporting for several weeks.
Initially, she was incredibly nervous about interviewing again after staying with the same employer for almost ten years.
Today she received positive feedback and secured a second interview for a finance role near Northwich.
The biggest difference wasn’t her CV.
It was confidence.
Once candidates settle into interviews and start treating them as conversations rather than interrogations, everything improves naturally.
Recruitment Still Comes Down to People
Technology has changed recruitment massively.
Online applications, video interviews and AI screening tools are everywhere now.
But the human side still matters most.
Candidates still want:
- honest advice
- reassurance
- preparation support
- feedback
- communication
And employers still value recruiters who genuinely understand people rather than simply forwarding CVs.
That relationship-driven approach is something we’ve always focused on across Northwich, Winsford and Knutsford.
Because recruitment works best when conversations stay human.
Simple Interview Advice I Gave Today
Some of the most useful advice I shared with candidates today was actually very straightforward:
- arrive early
- research the company
- prepare examples of achievements
- ask thoughtful questions
- maintain eye contact
- be honest if you don’t know something
- show enthusiasm
- remember interviews are two-way conversations
Simple things still make a huge difference.
