Why a Vague Job Description Produces Vague Applications

10 September 2026 / Advice for Hiring Managers

The Cost of a Vague Job Description

When you post a job advert that’s short on detail—light on responsibilities, vague about expectations, silent on culture or reporting lines—you force candidates to guess what you’re looking for. And when candidates guess, they send generic applications that rarely hit the mark.

The result is predictable: a pile of irrelevant CVs, hours spent shortlisting people who were never suitable, and interviews with candidates who don’t match the role. By the time you realise the advert was the problem, you’ve already lost weeks and the best candidates have moved on.

What a Vague Job Description Looks Like

Vague job descriptions share common weaknesses:

  • Generic role titles that could mean anything
  • Bullet points lifted from old templates without updating
  • No mention of day-to-day responsibilities or priorities
  • Unclear reporting lines or team structure
  • Salary listed as ‘competitive’ or omitted entirely
  • No insight into company culture, values or working environment
  • A long wish list of skills with no indication of what’s essential versus desirable

Candidates reading this kind of advert can’t tell whether they’re right for the role, so they either don’t apply at all or send a scattergun CV hoping something sticks.

Why Precision Attracts Better Candidates

A clear, detailed job description does three valuable things. First, it attracts candidates with the right experience because they can see themselves in the role. Second, it filters out poor matches early, saving you time. Third, it gives strong candidates the confidence to apply because they know exactly what you need and can demonstrate how they meet it.

Precision doesn’t mean writing a novel. It means being specific about:

  • What the role involves day-to-day
  • Who the person reports to and who they’ll work with
  • What success looks like in the first three, six and twelve months
  • The skills and experience that are non-negotiable
  • Realistic salary range and benefits
  • What makes your business a good place to work

When candidates have this information, they can self-assess accurately. The ones who apply are more likely to be genuinely suitable, and your shortlist becomes shorter and stronger.

How We Help Employers Get It Right

We work with Property and Construction employers across Cheshire to build vacancy briefs that attract the right talent first time. Before we advertise or approach candidates, we take time to understand the role in detail: the technical requirements, the team dynamics, the business priorities and the kind of person who will thrive.

That detail shapes everything we do. Every candidate we introduce has been spoken to and assessed against a clear brief, so you only meet people who genuinely match what you need. We also provide honest salary and market advice, so your offer is competitive and your expectations are realistic.

A vague job description wastes your time and sends strong candidates elsewhere. A precise one does the opposite.
